This green car port is in Essex. It has a lovely meadow green roof and also a straw-bale wall at the higher end of the building. Green and sustainable architecture in action.
This is one of our favourite roofs. Like a Greek mountainside, even in November, the native herbs give a whiff of the Mediterranean.
Green car port – sustainable architecture in action
The roof was built by the methods outlined in the guide. The materials used are all sustainably sourced. The substrate consists of over 70% crushed recycled ceramics. One of our favourite growing mediums. At the lower end are two rain chains to allow what water needs to run off the roof easily and without using plastic. Sustainable drainage in action.
Green car port – biodiversity in the built environment in action
A couple of years ago we visited with a group, who we had been training. It was at the end of July and John discovered a Red-legged Partridge nest in the far left hand corner. So compared to the industrial agricultural field in the background, the green car port is bird friendly.
Last year we visited and noticed an interesting plant that had taken up residence. Further investigation identified as Cuscuta (Dodder) species. The roof survives even the hardest drought, when Chives come prominence. The wildflowers attract a whole range of pollinators and insects.
Green car port – an alternative parking option
So if you have a car and want to park it somewhere more sustainable – why not build a green car port. If you drive is concreted over, bring permeability back to your drive with a green car port. And give nature some space on your property
It is the way to go.
